The macula is an anatomic term that refers to the central area of the retina. The macula is responsible for the sharp and direct vision needed for activities such as reading, driving or recognizing fine details. Macular edema refers to fluid or swelling of the retinal tissues that make up the macula. It may also include fluid that collects underneath the macula. This condition distorts the shape of the macula which leads to distorted central vision.

Causes

Macular edema results from numerous factors. It may be caused by diabetes, hypertension, macular degeneration and ocular inflammation.

Treatment

Treatment will be based upon the cause of the edema. This will be determined during your visit with the use of examination and testing. Treatment may be accomplished by injection of medication, laser therapy or treatment of the underlying condition causing the edema.
